Harry’s Razors – The best men’s razor option available

January 18, 2017 By Thad Forester

harry's_razors

Ever since my days of shaving began, I’ve used either Bic disposables or mostly Gillette Sensor (originals and up to the 3rd gen) razors.  I’m sure I’m like most men – I hated buying refills b/c they were too expensive, therefore I used each blade as long as possible.

Two years ago I decided I wasn’t buying blades from the store anymore, so I chose to order the MicroTouch Tough Blade razor because I kept seeing the commercial with Brett Favre advertising it.  I even ordered several extra blades.  However, I was never impressed; they were just average quality, and a little cheaper than the store-bought razors.

Well, I finally ran out of those blades and ordered from Harry’s.  They are a sponsor on SOFREP, so I’ve heard of them over the years that I’ve subscribed to this podcast.

Where to start:

harry's_razor_set
Truman Set

For starters, I chose the Truman Set, which comes with a razor, 3 blades and shaving cream.  It also comes with a small sample of aftershave and a blade cover.  All this for $15.

They have other options besides the Truman Set, so check out their site.

Each blade set consists of 5 individual blades. Compare this to 3 individual blades with my former razor brand, Tough Blade.

Why Harry’s razors:

They own their German factory AND sell direct.

They are much cheaper than any other razor company sold in stores.  I word it this way b/c I can’t speak for some of the online companies like Dollar Shave Club.  DSC has a brilliant marketing campaign and sold for huge bucks recently, so I assume they are pretty good.  But, I’ve never used them.  I don’t plan to unless Harry’s somehow disappoints in the future.  Their customer service even emailed me last week checking on my satisfaction.

Harry’s does offer shave plans.  I haven’t signed up for this option, but may go that route soon.

The blade quality seems superior to the other blades I’ve used.  Harry’s razor blades are very sharp.  Those Germans know how to sharpen steel.

Note: Even though these blades are sharp, go ahead and help prevent cuts by steaming with a hot rag first.

Gotta have some after-shave:

art_of_shaving aftershaveIt’s always good to finish up with some good after-shave.  I know this doesn’t have anything to do with Harry’s, but my wife got this for me from The Art of Shaving and you’ll appreciate the manly smell (probably your wife more than you).  I guess it heals and moisturizes well too.

Conclusion:

I love a good deal.  And, I’ve found a good deal with Harry’s.  So far, I’ve been using the same blade for a few weeks.

Obviously this will vary with each person.  I don’t shave everyday and when I have my beard, there’s only the neck to shave, but I actually enjoy shaving now that I have good blades.

Episode 019 – Larry Moores, Army Ranger, Platoon Ldr in Battle of Mogadishu

January 9, 2017 By Thad Forester

Larry_Moores and teamIn 1993, Larry Moores was leading a convoy to capture two Somali leaders when two Blackhawks were shot down.  Then the mission turned into a desperate search and rescue mission.  In what is known as “Black Hawk Down”, Larry describes his role in the battle that left 18 killed, over 80 wounded, and one missing pilot from his task force.

He shares with us valuable lessons he learned in Mogadishu and what roles his men played in recovering our dead and wounded.  Also, the benefits of living right in the city of Mogadishu and deploying from a very visible airfield.  The locals saw them all the time.

He enlisted as a young Army Ranger, commissioned through Officer Candidate School and served a 21-year career in Airborne, Ranger and Special Operations assignments, with numerous deployments including, Grenada, Somalia and Afghanistan.

Moores is now Executive Director of Three Rangers Foundation, which provides veterans with experts, advice and assistance in every aspect of their journey; whether spiritual, physical, mental, employment, finances, family, or education.

You want 40? — This is 40.

January 7, 2017 By Thad Forester

Thad 40th birthday
Conquering another mountain

As I approach being born 40 years ago this week, I’ve found myself reminiscing on my growing up days.  On my way home from work today I heard “Uptown girl”.  This brought me back to my childhood.  I got to thinking of all the music that reminds me of those very young and pre-teen days:  Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, AC/DC, Bon Jovi, and Survivor to name a few.

Survivor Eye of the Tiger

I owned some of this music on LP records, some 45’s and some tapes.  Shoot, we even listened to my “Thriller” tape in our 1st grade class.  To quote a line from “Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan” (a movie I watched infinite times in the mid-80’s), “Nursery days, nursery days.”

michael_jackson_-_thriller

Speaking of movies, I’m still amazed my parents let us watch Rambo (all of them) and Predator many times.  But, we also watched Rocky, Red Sonja, Conan the Destroyer, The Beastmaster, Police Academy and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure all the time.  Judging by this list, you may wonder how I didn’t turn out to be a complete lunatic.

Conan the Destroyer1984

When we weren’t entertaining ourselves outside, we had some sitcoms and shows we watched:  Silver Spoons, The A-Team, Chips, The Incredible Hulk, The Dukes of Hazzard, Growing Pains, Family Ties, Head of the Class, WKRP (you singing that song now??), The Six Million Dollar Man, and of course MacGyver on Monday nights.  We had no working remote and of course, no DVR.  We won’t even get into Saturday morning cartoons… man they were good.

the smurfs

I love the period I grew up in.  I was fortunate to have four siblings, three of which were older than me.  So, I got exposed to a wide range of pop culture.  Being born in ’77, I easily remember the early ’80’s, since my sister graduated in ’84.  And I stretch to the late ’90’s since my little brother graduated in ’99.  That gets me from Charlie’s Angels all the way to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and everything in-between.

Charlie's Angels

Anyone who knows me well knows I love Seinfeld.  All my brothers love it.  We quote it and reference it the majority of the time we’re together.  It’s so easy to slip into conversations.  Don’t you agree?  Unfortunately I’m finding less and less of those with whom I associate are familiar with Seinfeld.  That’s a shame.

Seinfeld opposite episode

One evening we got a call from our grandparents telling us they had a gift for our family.  My brother Joseph said “I bet it’s a VCR”.  I have no idea how he knew.  But, we went to their house and that’s what it was.  We were excited.  I was glad that we finally had a remote control that worked and we could operate the TV thru the VCR, so no more getting up to change the channels.

Those were great times.  We didn’t have to dial the prefix when calling someone in our town, we could dial our own number then hang up and our phone would ring.  And we could prank call either random people or those we knew and they didn’t who who it was (for those boring, rainy days).

michael-winslow

Birthday parties at the skating rink in 3rd grade never got old.  Every time I hear “Livin on a Prayer”, I’m immediately swooped back to that wooden, somewhat wavy-floor rink with the disco ball.

I’ve seen the turtleneck, aviators, and tapered jeans make a comeback.  We can only hope rat tails and mullets don’t do the same; although Mike Gundy‘s mullet is getting national attention.

Now, life is much different.  I have a wonderful wife and cute, healthy, active boys.  I feel much younger than 40.  I’m fortunate to have good employment.  It’s a much faster-paced world than those of my youth.  Mortgage and car payments, medical bills, yada, yada.  But, I know I’ll look back on these current days as great times too.

However, this particular week of my life won’t be considered one of those periods.  For certain reasons, I get to have a colonoscopy this week.  For those who’ve been thru this before, you are well-versed in the prepping.  My story gets good here.

colonoscopy meme

After a period of suffering thru the holidays, I finally got the procedure scheduled for Jan 6 (the day before my 40th).  First of all, I spent way too much time on the phone fighting with outpatient services over the insane amount of money they wanted up front.  I don’t know if I should thank my insurance or Obama for this, but in the end I lost that battle.

Then, I started the good ‘ol prep.  Since this wasn’t my first time, I had the liquid chilled, which def helped the taste.  After finishing that process, including getting up at 3 am the day of procedure to finish the prep work, I got a call at 5 am informing me that their offices were closed due to upcoming wintry conditions.  Therefore my colonoscopy was cancelled.

My exact words were, “That is great news” (full of sarcasm).  She apologized b/c she knew what I was inferring.  She knew I’d drank four liters of that hellacious clear liquid – all for nothing.

man-in-pain

So, yours truly gets to do the prep all over again since the procedure is re-scheduled for Monday.  The pharmacist even laughed as my wife picked up another prescription of GoLYTELY.  How many people are lucky enough to get to cleanse their colon two times, within 2.5 days?  I’m glad I’m one of them…

GoLYTELY meme for 40th

I’ve thought about my 40 th birthday for a long time – wondering what I wanted to do.  Instead of climbing one of the highest peaks in the country, taking a trip, sighting in my new rifle, or even spending time in the wilderness, I get to drink a massive bottle of vile tasting liquid and then spend the next several hours on the porcelain throne.  This really is 40, …. for me.

A few weeks ago my wife asked me what I wanted for my 40th birthday.  I said, “I want a colonoscopy.”

Wish granted; almost x’s 2.

Episode 018 – Christmas from Heaven: Gail Halvorsen, The Candy Bomber

December 25, 2016 By Thad Forester

On this special Christmas Day episode, we hear from a legend from WWII – Gail (Hal) Halvorsen.  He has many names:  Uncle Wiggly Wings, The Berlin Candy Bomber and The Chocolate Flier.  He became popular for dropping candy from his plane to the children of Berlin, from 1948-49.

His efforts gained support from many back in the states.  School children packaged candy in boxes with parachutes, and candy companies like Wrigley and Hershey’s donated items.  Thanks to his efforts he and his team had dropped 23 tons of candy by Christmas 1949.

Today we talk of “Operation Little Viddles”, how he became a pilot, how to overcome trials and depression, and the importance of serving others.  This is an uplifting episode that you don’t want to miss.  He shares that these children in Berlin taught him about freedom more than anything else.  It’s amazing what 2 sticks of gum turned into!

Episode 017 – Will Thomas, Honoring the Special Operations Community through Sport

December 12, 2016 By Thad Forester

will thomas - extortion 17

Will Thomas was 12 when the EXTORTION 17 tragedy helped him see that our freedom to compete in athletics and pursue other passions is made possible by the sacrifices of heroes.  Grateful for their gift, Will began honoring America’s special operations community through a mission called Operation Hawkeye.

Will is now a senior at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., and Operation Hawkeye has grown into a national grassroots organization of individuals and enterprises dedicated to honoring the service of fallen special operators and raising monetary and in-kind aid for related charities, mainly through athletic challenges and gear collaborations.

Last summer, for example, Will piloted a successful baseball-themed challenge called STRIKE FORCE, benefiting Gold Star Teen Adventures.  He is currently working on his biggest campaign yet – a national version of STRIKE FORCE allowing high school, travel, and college baseball teams across the country to use baseball to raise funds for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, beginning spring of 2017.

He also works with mission teammates to create branded apparel and other items benefiting special operations causes, such as the Operation Hawkeye shemagh scarf offered by Combat Flip Flops, which provides desperately-needed jobs in war-torn Afghanistan and helps fund programs offered by the TEAM 5 Foundation and the STATION Foundation.

Our future is bright with young men like Will stepping up to lead.  You can learn more about Will and his organization here, as well as him playing 2 on 2 in his driveway with Admiral McRaven:
