Ep 113 | Hershel “Woody” Williams – Medal of Honor Recipient from Iwo Jima

January 1, 2024 By Thad Forester

The late Woody Williams will never forget the odor of burning human remains.

“There are some things about that 4 hours that have bothered me my whole life… I can’t remember going back and getting the other 5 flamethrowers.  It was so horrific, I didn’t want to remember.”

I was introduced to death by flamethrower after learning of Mr. Williams.  He went thru 5 – 70 lb flamethrowers in a 4-hour battle on Iwo Jima.  Two of the Marines assigned to him were killed that day protecting his life.  At the time of this interview in 2017, he was the last surviving recipient of the Medal of Honor from that battle, and the last surviving Marine to receive the Medal of Honor for heroism in World War II. Mr. Williams died in 2022.

I asked Woody, “What did you know about Iwo Jima before you got there?”  His response, “Not a thing!”  Later he saw the flag raised on Mount Suribachi, but didn’t consider the significance at that time.  He had a job to do and wasn’t reveling in the moment.

His story is remarkable.  He was awarded the Medal of Honor by Pres. Truman, but admits being more nervous to meet the Commandant of the Marine Corp than the President.  He shares with us what both these men told him regarding the medal.  He didn’t know anything about the MOH beforehand.  Even the day he received it he didn’t know what it was about.

Awesome interview.  You should read his medal citation below and learn more about him at these links:

GORUCK 24.7 Simple Pants Review: Are They Worth the Money?

December 23, 2023 By Thad Forester

Introduction:

Are they worth the money? Yes! Click here if you want to buy.

For my breakdown as to why, read on below and you can watch my video review here too:

The older I’ve gotten, the more I wear comfortable clothes. Bottom line, I want clothing that is versatile–that I can wear to work, exercise in and wear casually around the house or town.

For my needs, there are several options, but I’ve found what I believe are the most versatile pants available – the GORUCK 24.7 Simple Pants. They offer a unique blend of functionality, durability, and style.

Here is a deep dive into 6 reasons the 24.7 Simple Pants are the best for men, therefore worth the money:

  1. Durable Construction: GORUCK 24.7 Simple Pants are infused with Nylon.  This ToughDry material is made to be fast-drying, abrasion resistant and lightweight, with 2-way stretch.  Renowned for their robust construction, this makes them ideal pants for anyone facing diverse environments. Crafted from high-quality materials, these pants are designed to withstand the rigors of daily wear and tear, ensuring longevity even in challenging conditions. In addition, they come with the Scars Lifetime Guarantee – you break it, they fix it! I’ve put my oldest pair to the test and sent back one time for repair, which was quickly fixed and returned. There is no better lifetime guarantee on the market.

2. Versatility in Design: One of the standout features of GORUCK Simple Pants is their versatile design. There are no logos, extra pockets or anything that even resembles “tactical”. I often find myself in urban settings to rugged terrains to the unplanned pick-up game of basketball or football with my boys. Having pants made for movement and style will not limit you and they seamlessly transition between these environments, offering a practical solution for individuals constantly on the move.

Getting blister work while wearing the GORUCK 24.7 Simple Pants for 28 Mile Ruck

I wore the Simple Pants for our annual Mark Forester 28 Mile Ruck in 2021. It was sunny the entire day, with the humidity of north Alabama, and temp in the 80’s (Fahrenheit). I had no issues with sweating or being too hot or restricted. They provided protection so my legs were one less part of my body that could get sun burned since it took us 11 continuous hours.

Simple design with no loud logos on the outside.

3. Comfortable Fit: Comfort is a prerequisite for me, and GORUCK 24.7 Simple Pants deliver on this front. The thoughtful design includes a comfortable fit that allows for ease of movement without compromising style. Whether navigating crowded streets, engaging in physical activities or lounging on the couch, these pants provide the flexibility required for diverse tasks.

4. Quick Drying, Moisture Wicking and Water Repellant: GORUCK 24.7 Simple Pants are equipped with moisture-wicking properties, ensuring that wearers stay dry and comfortable even in humid or wet climates. Additionally, the quick-drying feature is a game-changer for those caught in unexpected rain or facing the challenge of limited laundry facilities, or just too lazy to do laundry.

Of course, if you’re doing a GORUCK event, these pants are obviously made for them–get wet, muddy, bear crawls, burpees, rucking–you name it–anything. Either these Simple Pants or the Challenge Pants (if you want the side pockets) are go-to’s for GORUCK events.

Water rolling right off in shower.

5. Stylish Aesthetics: While functionality is paramount, GORUCK 24.7 Simple Pants do not compromise on style. The clean and minimalist design ensures that wearers can seamlessly blend into diverse cultural settings without sacrificing a polished appearance. This makes these pants a versatile and suitable choice for various active-man contexts. I wear them to the office and they are my go-to for overnight travel. These are called simple for a reason–they don’t have hidden or zippered pockets, only two front and two back.
An additional note: if you prefer skinny pants, these are probably not for you. These are for movement and style. So your calves will not bulge in these b/c they have a straight cut at the bottom.

6. Ease of Care: These pants want to be worn often and even multiple times between washes. And they do not require ironing. Wash in cold water, air dry and wear; allowing for a shorter turnaround time between washing and wearing again. It can’t get any easier, I promise.

Conclusion:

If adaptability, durability, and comfort are crucial to you, GORUCK 24.7 Simple Pants are the clear choice. Their robust construction, versatile design, and built to last ToughDry fabric make them the go-to option for those seeking reliable and adaptable clothing. In addition, they fold up (or roll up) to the size of a can of Coke for easy packing and travel.  For those who want tough, comfortable pants, while committed to making a lasting impact, GORUCK 24.7 Simple Pants prove to be an indispensable necessity on your journey.

I’ve been wearing the gray/charcoal Simple Pants for over 3 years, so this is an informed review. I’ve worn the coyote Simple Pants for over 2 years. I ruck with them, travel in them, wear to work, cut my grass, hike and even exercise in them–especially when it’s cold and I need tough pants. These really are the hidden gem in the GORUCK catalog. They will last for years and still look new–mine do.

These pants come in lightweight (about $105) and midweight (about $115). The obvious difference is lightweight is thinner, better for hot temperatures. I have both and use both, but prefer the midweight for colder weather.

Have I missed anything? What questions do you have?

In full disclosure, I have the Lululemon ABC and Commission pants that feel great and that I love. I got these years ago before GORUCK’s Simple Pants existed. The limitation with them is I’d never wear them in the woods or get muddy. They would fray with the first briar stick. Yes, they are stretchy and feel great, but the benefits stop there. And they are cheaper than Lululemon!

Ep 112 | Mark Schmitz – Disaster at Abbey Gate

December 11, 2023 By Thad Forester

Mark Schmitz’s son, LCpl Jared Schmitz, was one of the 13 Americans murdered at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, on 26 August 2021 during the evacuation from Afghanistan.

He was just 20 years old. He was there on a humanitarian mission working the infamous Abbey Gate. When Afghans made it past the Taliban checkpoints, they were desperate to get on a flight out of Afghanistan. Jared and his fellow Marines, and others, were there among crowds so large and compact that he said if your arms were at your side, you couldn’t raise the above your head.

We discuss how this suicide bomber made it to the bottlenecked gate and was able to kill so many. Why the sniper wasn’t given permission to kill him beforehand. And, what has been the government’s response since. Note: this bomb also killed over 100 Afghan civilians.

He has also created The Freedom 13.org that supports the veterans still with us. They have big plans for retreats in each state so that Veteran’s and their families can stay for free, much like and Airbnb, but with land, shooting, fishing, riding, etc. Learn about their upcoming events, including how to donate or volunteer, by visiting here: https://thefreedom13.org/pages/events

GORUCK 15L Bullet Rucker Review – After 28 Mile Ruck

December 6, 2023 By Thad Forester

In May 2023, I completed our annual Mark Forester JAG 28 Memorial Birthday Walk/Ruck. This was the first year I’ve used the GORUCK Bullet Rucker instead of the GR2 that I’ve used the past 12 years (along with using for many months of training each year).

This 15L Bullet Rucker had the capacity for everything I needed, although it was a little snug. I really like the size and simplicity.

So that you have all the details of this event, I’ll fill you in so you know why I carried what I did and didn’t carry other things, like water and food/snacks.

-it’s an organized event with police escorts and planned rest stops every 5-7 miles.
-each stop had drinks and snacks, along with a lunch stop
-we had a trailing car that provided drinks between stops when needed
-the weather was in the 50’s to upper 70’s, so it never got too hot
-we were on paved city and county roads the entire 28 miles, however 6 miles was on a dirt road

Here is a link that will take you to GORUCK’s site, so you see more info and purchase if you want: https://www.thadforester.com/gryt-rucker

I am an affiliate, so if you use my link, I’ll get a tiny commission and it will not cost you a thing. And here is my previous review comparing with the GR 2:

https://youtu.be/3pjYDF5aImM

Here is what I carried in my Bullet Rucker (shown in the video and in pic below):

-5 pair Balega hidden comfort socks, 1 pair Darn Tough socks (in case my feet had serious issues. They didn’t!)
-1 extra pair SAXX underwear
-1 extra pair GORUCK Simple Shorts
-2 extra shirts
-blister kit
-Gold Bond powder
-Body Glide
-2 Bulletproof Bands (compression bands for achilles prehab at each rest stop)
-cell phone power charger
-1 Rx Bar

GORUCK Indestructible Training Shorts Review – after 3 years

December 1, 2023 By Thad Forester

You can read more about these and purchase here: https://www.thadforester.com/grtrainingshorts-yt

After three years of use, it’s time I do a review on these GORUCK Indestructible Training Shorts (formerly called American Training Shorts).

I have 3 pair and all are XL. My waist is 36″.

They wick sweat very well, don’t stick to my legs when I am sweating or wet during my workout, and dry very quickly. They have the typical GORUCK ToughStretch, which basically means they are 4-way stretch material.

I cover a couple cons, but overall, I like them enough to have several and have been using multiple times/week during warm weather for training (parking lots, sidewalks, roads, tennis courts, grass and garage workouts – down on and off the ground often). I wear them to play tennis too. Each pocket holds 2 tennis balls well.

These are $75, with the Tiger Stripe pattern being $85. Obviously not cheap. Worth it? Depends what’s important to you. In the long run, these have the GORUCK Scars Lifetime Guarantee. That’s def something to consider.

What are the brands that you like or are trying to decide between them and GORUCK?

You got questions? Ask me.

Get the shorts or read more about them on GORUCK’s site here: https://www.thadforester.com/grtrainingshorts-yt
