My buddy Nathan sent this to me. Note sure if it’s a popular video, but I like it. The Catholic Church isn’t telling their members who to vote for–or not directly. The video is 3:30 minutes and worth watching. If you’re not registered to vote, do so now. You still have until around October 24th.
Gulf Shores 2008
We had a great beach trip to Gulf Shores this weekend. Along with Rozlynn and me were Mark, Michael and Roz’s friend from DC, Olivia. We ate some dang good food at Lambert’s (home of throw’d rolls), LuLu’s, and Peach Park.
Last night Mark, Michael and I rode the Sky Coaster, which is my favorite thrill ride, and the ladies rode go-carts. I was disappointed to see some of them using the breaks. I never knew go-carts had breaks.
It was good to introduce Roz and Olivia to the beautiful beaches of Alabama. Hayden, Dave and JesseAnn would have been jealous since they were with us last year for this trip.

‘Extremely’ Bad Decision
Alabama Investor has an interesting article about a family in Georgia who was the recipients of an Extreme Makeover Home Edition back in 2005. Their home was paid off and $250k was raised for their children’s college. Now they have lost their home to foreclosure (including the $250k). How could this happen? It blows my mind. I Love to Hate
It’s no secret that I love college football; therefore there are several teams that I really can’t stand (or maybe even hate). Miami, Tennessee and USC are three at the top of the list. Notice Auburn isn’t on there. I don’t like them, but I always want them to do well throughout the season until they play Bama. It makes the Iron Bowl that much better.
Mark Schlabach of ESPN compiled a list of the 10 most hated schools. Alabama comes in a #8. The way I see it, if you’re on this list then you’re doing something right (although we haven’t done much right during the past decade). Here they are:
1. Ohio State
2. USC
3. Notre Dame
4. Florida
5. Oklahoma
6. Michigan
7. Texas
8. Alabama
9. Miami
10. Tennessee
I think this is pretty accurate. Is there a school you think is missing?
Frank Caliendo
I’ve never watched Frank TV, but I love his impersonations of Charles Barkley, President Bush, Bill Walton and Donald Trump. Check out some of his clips.
He is coming to town in October so we may be seeing him then.
Seinfeld Returns to Birmingham
Just two weeks ago I said to myself, “when Jerry Seinfeld comes back to B’ham, I’m going.” We’ll a few days later I heard he was coming so I bought tickets today. I am pumped, but I don’t think Rozlynn is as excited as I am–I don’t know why. I’ve heard he puts on a good show. And since 80% of the conversations between my brothers and me are Seinfeld related, it should be good.
One of my favorite routines he does is the bit about how women basically think all men are the same. That’s why at weddings they all wear the same clothing–tuxedos. And the preacher marrying them doesn’t say “Do you take (insert name) to be your husband…?” He says, “Do you take this man…?” If he can’t do it, all the groomsmen shift over one step and she can marry the next one.
Relaxing Picture
I Love Southwest Airlines
Since I’ve been flying a lot lately I’ve become even more fond of Southwest. Have you flown with them? I know many people give them a bad rap because it’s a ‘no-frills’ airline, but I’ll take that any day since they let me change flights all the time and consistently have the cheapest fares. Plus they have great direct flights out of Birmingham.
I don’t know for sure, but I think they were the first airline to not use the traditional ‘hub-and-spoke’ system like the other airlines. Does anyone know if this is for sure true? I’m not going to research it, so we can just go with this. Several other airlines have adopted a hybrid hub-and-spoke system in the past decade or two.
I did not like their new boarding system when I first experienced it back in December, but since then I’ve come to really like it. It keeps people from standing in line well before the plane is ready to be boarded.
I asked a flight attendant (in the old days she would be called a Stewardess) on Sunday how many days in a row she works. She said, “I’m probably not the best person to ask that because I only work six days a month.” She’s been with the company for 20 years and she said seniority is everything with them. She flies when she wants. I like that kind of job. Of course, I don’t know how much she’s getting paid, but obviously she can afford it. This is one reason why all their employees are much happier than the other airlines.
I read a great book last year called “Lessons in Loyalty” about how Southwest Airlines operates and what type of people they employ. It’s like one big party. I’d love to work for them. Too bad they don’t have planning or logistics positions in my area.
Finally OJ Gets Something
It doesn’t make up for his murders about 15 years ago, but I’m glad to see he got some form of punishment for recent acts.
