HR 45 Gun Bill

I received a bothering call from the NRA tonight regarding a recent anti-gun bill,  H.R. 45.  This bill would basically make it illegal to own any loaded firearm for self-defense–or to have it in a place where it’s available for protection of gun owner and/or family.  And get this, the government agency over this would be able to inspect your home to make sure the gun is stored properly.
This doesn’t surprise me because I knew those associated with Obama would push this topic hard, even though we all know the President kept saying he’s a supporter of the Second Amendment…  What’s scary is the government would tell us if we can have a gun, and if we are capable of owning the current gun(s) we may have.  I don’t need some left wing city slicker telling me if I’m capable of owning a gun, and taking my fingerprints for this purpose.  This is none of the government’s business.  The NRA says this bill ”focuses on the instruments of crime rather than the criminals”.

Here are some links to read about it.  Their explanations are much better than mine.

It was great to see you a few weeks ago, I keep forgetting that you’re back. Even when Roz calls my mom about RS things I’m like who’s Roz? Oh yeah!

Anyway, Mark and I are reading Glenn Beck’s book Common Sense, it’s pretty good.

I think the government wants us not to have guns so we can’t rise up against them. Big government, the demise of every nation…

I just got the same call. It was the NRA trying to sell me membership or give a contribution. A little research on the bill (which admittedly is abhorrent) shows a couple interesting bits…

HR45 is essential the same bill as was introduced in 2007 as HR2666 of the 110th congress (see: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h110-2666) . This is not an Obama initiative and I think the dems would have to be idiots to think they could act on this bill and keep their seats at the next election. HR45 has been referred to the same committee that HR2666 was referred to without even so much as a single co-sponsor. Last go around, HR2666 didn’t even get presented to committee, much less actually debated or even come close to a real house vote. No coincidence that HR45 is stuck in the same state. Plus, there has been absolutely 0 similar legislation introduced into the senate. All this means is that it is highly unlikely to see the light of day. Crackpot bills are introduced by crackpot representatives all the time. Anytime you get 435 individuals together, your going to have a few whose ideas are just loony. That’s why it’s so difficult for a bill to become law.

Oh, the fact that the bill was introduced at the start of the congressional session but only now being “reported on” by the NRA direct marketing calls really does make me think the NRA is just milking this as a recruitment opportunity and fund drive. Scare folks into action by taking a bill that has no chance in actually going anywhere, paint Obama as a gun control nut, and offer themselves as the champion of our rights (for the modest fee of…)

Anyway, enough of a rant… nothing personal, your’s was just the first blog google returned to me on a search for ‘HR45 gun bill NRA call” and I felt compelled to vent.
