Oil shale has the same energy density as baked potatoes and requires massive amounts of energy and water to get something approximating petroleum products out the other end. The reason that we're not developing it is because companies haven't yet figured out how to do so profitably. Sure, go ahead and fund more research, whatever, but let's be realistic about what oil shale can and cannot offer.

I'm certainly in favor of using US resources, including ANWR and offshore oil, but we use 25% of the world's oil. So long as that remains true, energy independence is a pipe dream.

The American Trucking Association has been testifying in front of a Senate committee about oil prices. They also advocate drilling in America. I think it's funny how environmentalists cry wolf when we want to tap into our own resources, but don't seem to care as much that it's going on in another country. We need other sources of energy, but shouldn't leav it up to the oil companies. After all, they're OIL companies. And Thad, if I ruled the world, we'd all be translated by now..........

True on the cheating on his wife part. He just gets blasted worse than many others who have done that and much more (like, I don't know, maybe Clinton..)

I agree with the refineries too; we need more, but I don't think they have interest in any others means of fuel. I definitely don't have the answers, but I sure do have the frustration. Thanks for your thoughts. And nuclear power is a must too. If I ruled the world, things would be much different.

Damon, you missed the 9-1-1 festival and parade today in H'ville this weekend. There is a lot of BBQ up here and I saw an incredibly wise old man today--he was riding a scooter as his mode of transportation. Of course Haleyville is the kind of town where you can ride golf carts around too, which some were doing.

I think Newt's reputation started going downhill when he started cheating on his wife....

I am completely with you on drilling for oil at home. I also think we should be using nuclear power for a lot of our country's energy needs. As far as the shale oil goes, I think it will be utilized when it is economically feasable for oil companies to do it, right now, the oil companies are refining at full capacity anyway so what would be the point of going out and getting more oil? We need to build the refineries first and increase our refining capacity THEN it will make economic sense for them to develop the shale (which would be great).
