You may remember a few posts back where I said how much I love my job. I still love it, but my good friend Patrick (aka P-diddy), who got me hired there, got laid off yesterday. That was a shock. It shouldn’t have been though. Many businesses are struggling to make a profit and are concentrating on being as lean as possible. When execs (and in some cases pencil-pushers only) see those high salaries, that’s where they like to hit.
Instantly I wondered where I stood since I just started. I was told that I have nothing to worry about. I’ll just keep doing my job and hope for the best. This is why I must find alternate sources of making money and why I want to get into real estate. I don’t want to rely on someone else to decide if I get a paycheck or not. And I definitely don’t want to be surprised. I was laid off back in October and it was a shock. I had feelings that it might happen, but the timing was still sudden. Fortunately I got a nice severence package, so I was fine. And I’ve been blessed with good employment since.
I’m seeing and hearing of many companies laying off, not filling positions, and even filing bankruptcy. My last company (where I worked for 2 months) just filed for bankruptcy. Glad I’m out of there.
I have no problems with people making a lot of money–this is America and we all have that chance. I have a desire to generate an extreme amount of money. My problem is when the people who make the decisions to cut back are so far removed from the plant level that they have no idea what is really going on. All they see are numbers. I know numbers don’t lie, but I think there’s a little more to it than that. I’m not saying this happened yesterday, but I know it does happen at many places.
It’s a tough world out there, but I’m glad to be a part of it. Only now I don’t have anyone to carpool with each day.
We had three layoffs here at UAB just this week.
Thanks for reading Steven. Somewhat surprising to see a big company like UAB doing it. Layoffs can be a blessing if there’s a nice severance package. But the blow to the ego sometimes hurts.
I requested Thad update my progress, but given his laziness he has failed me again. P-diddy is back in the saddle and riding high. You can’t keep a good womanizer down. I actually think Thad set me up to take my women, my killer desk, and my fly fishing picture. I wouldn’t be surprised by this, given he is a communist sympathizer and drives a Toyota.
I have tried to help Thad in his pursuit and understanding of the opposite sex but he has not received the masters instruction well…
1 – set your standards low…that way you are never disappointed.
2 – take the shotgun approach…sooner or later you are bound to get something decent.
3 – where possible date foreigners…if it doesn’t work out all you need to do is call the INS and get them deported.
4 – girls who are a little large are not off the menu…just think of them as dating two women at the same time.
5 – Color and race shouldn’t be an issue…ergo…Chinese = Chinese food, Latino = Mexican, Russian = sexy accent, etc. etc.
6 – Women who are twice your age are perfect…no need to worry about long term committments, they smell nice…if you like Oil of Old Lady, and they get social security money every month.
7 – And lastly….skanks and women of low or lax moral character need love too…probably more than most…and aren’t we on this planet to love thy neighbor and his wife?
